I just found out my Step-Sister will be around for Christmas.
This isn't necessarily a bad thing. She and I aren't close, but we get along reasonably well. I didn't expect her, since she'd just moved down to the States for a new job. But apparently, things are going well enough for her that she can fly back on Christmas Eve.
Ok, awesome. . . but everyone else in my immediate family has knitted christmas gifts. And I don't necessarily mind knitting for her.
Well, the Purple Purl's Sale worked out in my favour this year -- I got a skein of Sweet Georgia Superwash Chunky, and a set of monstrous 12.75 mm needles (I usually use 4mm or smaller!).
I've already balled it up, and unfortunately the light isn't the best, but here:
It's actually far more of a tan colour, the light makes it look more blue.
(I got other stuff at the sale, too, but I don't have good pictures since I'm currently taking pictures with my tablet. )
I also found a (free) 1-skein cowl pattern, which is the Marian Cowl. It actually calls for super-bulky, but I thought that might be too stiff, and besides which, I was working with what I could a) easily get my hands on and b) was superwash.
Also, it's supposed to be worked in the round, but the only bigger needles I could find were straight needles, but I've decided I can just seam it afterwards. Yes, I hate seaming, but I can put up with it in this case.
So, my step-sister is getting a cowl, a cowl that is actually kniting up really, really fast. I'm already 1.5 inches along with just some work on it tonight.
Man, for instant gratification, bulky yarn and big needles can't be beat!

A Pre-Boxing Day Sale
Like a good number of my previous posts, this is also, pretty much what the title says.
The Purple Purl is holding their Pre-Boxing Day Sale on Sunday the 22nd.
All the details are in their Newsletter Post. But basically, everything's 20% off (with a few exceptions), and you can still earn loyalty points, you just can't redeam them during the sale.
I intend to go, money and time allowing. I have a shopping list of yarns I can get at the Purple Purl, and so I might as well get them on sale.
Sadly, my purchases at the upcoming Purple Purl sale probably not be as much as I got at their Summer Sale, simply because there's less on my shopping list, and I'm trying to compact what stash I do have (it's creeping out of its cupboard and I'm not happy with that). I am, however, thinking of picking up a couple of skeins of the Juniper Moon Findley laceweight (because laceweight takes up a lot less space, and I have several projects I'd like to do in it!)

Calling All Fans of Tanis Fiber Arts!
So yeah. . . Tanis is going to be in Toronto on Friday.
She's being hosted at the Purple Purl this Friday, November 29th, from 6 to 9 pm.
Details are here, on the Purple Purl's Ravelry Post about the event.
I definitely intend to go.
And, in celebration, here's some TFA patterns and projects I've updated over the past little while. I'll be bringing these two, at least to show off while I'm there. :)

I guess it's kind of telling that most of my knits in TFA yarns are knits for me. . . . Shows how much I like it!
Looking Forward to Friday!

Ravelry Re-organization and Purple Purl Purple Sale!
So I've embarked on an ambitious task: I want to re-organize and clear out my Ravelry Queue.
It's a challenge, considering that I basically stuck any pattern that caught my fancy into my queue. Now it's gotten way too long and unwieldy, so it's getting chopped down to size and most of the stuff is going into the favorites.
. . . this is going to take a while, considering it's 64 pages long, and that's after chopping it down already.
But, it's an ongoing battle.
In other news, the Purple Purl is having a Purple Sale. (Try saying that three times fast!) It's just at the bottom of the newsletter link, and it's this weekend (Saturday, November 16th). There will also be food, and, if you donate non-perishable food to their food bank drive, there are prize draws. :)
I'm going to try and go. I want some Classic Elite Yarns Solstice (which is being discontinued, which -sucks-), to make a Sakura Tee, so I'm going to see if I can pick some up in a shade of purple. Usually I wouldn't grab yarn for a pattern this early, but since this is being discontinued, I want to grab it while I can.
Also, if money allows, I'll get a skein of Silver Label. Last time I was there, they still had some in the "Grape" colourway, which is both purple, and very pretty.

Sock Gussets and more pretty yarn
So, I'm about half-way through the gussets on my Gox Socks.
They're going to be tight to the Sept 30th deadline, but I should be good. I'm actually really enjoying this test-knit. These socks promise to be nice and warm.
Also, I was out at the Purple Purl yesterday (The Purple Purl is about a block north of my volunteer sites, so it's really convenient when I'm out there), and I picked up the skein of Silver Label I was planning on getting.
Tanis Fiber Arts Silver Label in Cobalt:
I'm -loving- the colourway, and it should look -awesome- knitted up.

Fuzzy Knitting Helpers.
Well, this was supposed to be a general update on my other knitting projects.
But it appears to have been taken over by the cats!
First is my Spring Coat (which with a bit of knitting luck might be finished in time for deep Fall, I'll have to see). I finished the body to the underarms and started the sleeve.
But this is what happened when I put the body aside and went to find my double-pointed needles for the sleeve. . .
She was quite content about this!
Secondly, I was winding the yarn for the Fall Lake Slippers, and I had the other fuzzy helper decided to 'help' unwind the skein.
She really does like Briggs and Little, it seems!
The sole I'm knitting up is from an older slipper pattern that I already have, and it's done with the yarn held double. Well, bulky yarn held double on 4.5 mm needles is a pretty tight knit. I'm glad I'm only working the sole with doubled yarn.
Finally, I won 5 dollars over PayPal from a contest I entered months ago. I'd always intended to pick up a pattern over Ravelry with it (because there's not much else I would spend 5 dollars online for), and decided on the Fairview Scarf. I intend to do it in Tanis Fiber Arts Silver Label. Yes, Silver Label is no longer being distributed, (but you can still order it directly from Tanis Fiber Arts), but last I checked the Purple Purl still had some in stock.

A Bad Day with A Good Ending
Long Post Warning:
So I'm writing this under the influence of a rather unhappy stomach. It's better then it was last night, but, well, let me tell the tale from the beginning.
I had work this morning, then a whole bunch of errands to downtown in afternoon. Already, I knew this was going to be a long day.
Lets just say I fell on my behind and ended up in a lot of pain, didn't do half the errands I was planning, the place I wanted to go for lunch/dinner was closed (this involved quite a walk), and the place I did go for food. . . well, it disagreed with me. Violently.
So by the time I got to Knit Night at the Purple Purl, I was nausious, thirsty, and hurty. Not the best mindset to be knitting in, but actually, it mostly worked out. Oh, I didn't feel great, but once I had the chance to sit down, sip a mug of tea, and actually re-compose myself, I felt a lot more human.
Thank you!
Ok, so I was actually going to the Purple Purl in search of yarn. I've been looking for the right yarn for a friend's Christmas gift. It has to be grey superwash, fingering-weight, wool.
My first choice was the Tanis Fiber Arts Blue Label in Charcoal, which is a colourway that Eat.Sleep.Knit doesn't stock. Of course, unfortunately, the Purple Purl didn't have it either.
However, they did find me yarn that will suit perfectly.
I now have two skeins of Spud and Chloe Fine that will become a Caffinate! Coffee Press cover.
The pattern calls for worsted weight, but my giftee has a mini-coffee press, and the idea of a mini-dalek made her giggle with delight over the phone, so I'm planning to just scale down the pattern in stitches per inch, work it with fingering-weight yarn, and call it done. I got dimensions out of her, so I should be good to go.
(Also, happily, I discovered in uploading this this morning, that Ravelry will keep stash entries separate if they have separate dye lots. Well done!)
After getting my yarn, I then settled into work on my knitting at the knit night. I got the index finger done on the Birthday Gloves, (no new pic yet, I haven't had the energy), and started the thumb.
Holy crap, an afterthought thumb in fair-isle is hard! A lot of the others there were saying that it wouldn't be easy, and they were right. The bottom nine stitches came together just fine. The top stitches. . . well, after a lot of cursing everything's on the needles, but it looks a little deformed.
I don't want to do this again in fair-isle. I'd be a lot happier casting off and picking up. I might, however, try it again on the left glove and see, however, if part of my frustration and inability was just simply the day I'd had.
So, after that long day, my stomach still lurching somewhat on the streetcar ride home, yes, I have new yarn, but I'm still not feeling that great. . .
I come home to two boxes sitting in my living room. One is small, the other big. My roommate tells me that the post came for me. No customs fees, no problem, the boxes just simply got dropped off.
So, another order came in from Eat.Sleep.Knit, for starters, and, as well, my Yarn Swift arrived!
I put it to work as a trial immediately, and I -love- this thing! I'm actually really impressed by the Hornshaw Wood Works. Their stuff is awesome, shipping was quick, and it was really well packed.
I needed 1 contrast skein for my plans with the Sweet Georgia Merino Silk Aran, and "Hush" seemed like a good contrast colourway.
I also got two skiens of Sweet Georgia Superwash Worsted. This is me planning ahead -- this is for my Father's Birthday next year (no knitting 3 hours before the deadline again, I hope!) I usually wouldn't have bothered, except the Superwash Worsted is a Power Boost Yarn, so I might as well buy it now while I get a bonus for it.
So coming home to yarn and a swift really helped perk up my day.
I crawled into bed somewhat soon after that.
I'm feeling somewhat better now, though breakfast is still a question mark. But I'll distract myself with knitting, for the moment.

New Socks Test-knit
So, the details on my new test-knit.
The pattern is called My Gox, and the Ravelry database page for it is here.
I picked up two skiens of Tanis Blue Label from The Purple Purl today for this; and I have to admit, I'm actually really excited about these, despite my mounting pile of other knitting. (I even had enough reward points to get 25 dollars off, too!)
So, Tanis Blue Label in Frost:
Oh, and speaking of test-knits, the pattern for my previous pair of test-knit socks (I should really finish the other sock of that pair!) just went live. They're Pacific Rim socks, and the pattern is a) really fun to knit, and b) a great way to use up oddiments of sock yarns.

So, Tanis Blue Label in Frost:
It's a neat colourway, and I think it will really suit the pattern (not to mention, I'm loving the Tanis Blue Label for socks. It seems to work really well.)
I was hoping to only need one skein of Blue Label. I still might only need the one. But in speaking with the designer, the yardage for the pattern is just enough that I'd rather have the second skein. I'd rather have it and not need it, then need it and not have it. And, I have plans for that second skein anyway -- the leftovers from the Gox Socks will (hopefully) become the Birch Leaf Socks from "A Gathering of Lace."

Yarn Haul!
So, I went to the Purple Purl's sale, and came back with quite a nice haul of yarn and pattern books.
I got 5 skeins of Noro Silk Garden Sock for an Entrelac Scarf, I meant to grab the heavyier-weight Silk Garden, but this should work just fine.
(I swear, this pattern is cursed, this is the second time I've grabbed the wrong weight of yarn for it!)
Anywyay, I also got 8 skeins of Classic Elite Yarns Solstice, for a t-shirt,

A bunch of different colours of Spud & Chloë Fine, for another pair of Woman's Fair-Isle Gloves. It's the same pattern I'm using for the Birthday Gloves, but this pair is going to be for me!
And some Tanis Fiber Arts Green Label for a pair of basic mittens that will be a Christmas Gift.
Finally, I got some Dye-Version Bamboo Fingering, in the custom colourway dyed up for the Purple Purl. This is the only yarn I don't have plans for, but it's been calling my name for a while. It will become something awesome, I'm sure, especially with the two new lace pattern books I got on sale, as well.
(Edit: I've found a pattern for this -- it's the June Bunnies Shawl. I think it will work nicely with the yardage I've got.)
And, along with all that, like I mentioned, I got two lace pattern books I've had my eye on on Ravelry for quite some time. The first is 'A Gathering of Lace' and the second is 'Arctic Lace'
I've already got plans for several patterns in there.
All in all, it was a pretty good day. I got a lot of good stuff for cheap, and I won't need to buy yarn again for a -long- while (though I do have some plans that require some Briggs and Little Regal -- might be time for a call to the Briggs and Little mill soon. . . .)

So How Fast can I knit. . .?
Ok.
So I've gotten work done on a bunch of projects. I got past the thumb on the Birthday Gloves (no new picture there yet, sorry!), and I got 6 more squares done on Christmas Scarf. . . .
The Birthday Socks that I now have 10 days to finish?
No, I haven't worked on them at all over this marathon until today, and the only reason I worked on them today was because I was out and about, and my work meeting takes place about two blocks from The Purple Purl. So, I went in and just sat and knit (and chattered to the owners) and got a few inches into the foot. But I still have another whole sock to do.
This is going to be interesting. . . can I knit fast enough to finish these socks in ten days?

Yarn Sale at The Purple Purl!
So, I found out this morning that the Purple Purl is having a sale. Specifically, they're having their "We don't want to count the Inventory Blowout!"
Details are here, as well, but in summary:
25% off most of their regular stuff. One day only (Sat, August 10th). Some stuff will be more then 25%, but you'll have to go in-store to find out. They also comment that their seating won't be available during this time (I'm now imagining armchairs full of yarn!)
Oh, and if you collect their reward points, you can't redeem them during the sale, but you'll still collect them.
I'm intending to go. I don't have oodles of money right now, (new job, yes, but no pay until August 31st just due to how their payroll works) but I still want to see if I can get a couple of skeins of Tanis for some more Christmas knitting. If I'm very lucky with my yarn budget, I might even get a couple of skeins of Spud and Chloe Fine for a pair of gloves I've been planning for myself.
Since I usually do try to buy yarn on sale, this is perfect.
Hope to see some familiar faces there!
P.S. If you are in the Toronto area and haven't been to the Purple Purl before, you really should. It's actually quite a nice place, and their yarn selection is awesome. They're right on the Queen streetcar, too, (or you can take a bus down from Donlands Subway) so they're not too hard to get to. I don't drive, so I can't speak to the street parking, sorry!
